[CDN] What did Discipleship mean to Jesus?
The word 'discipleship' is used by many people in the church to mean a variety of things, from 1-on-1 mentorship to spiritual growth. But what did Jesus mean when he talked about discipleship? Ryan Weingartner, Young Leaders National Specialist for YFC, has done a deep dive on this topic.
Time & Location
Dec 12, 2024, 11:45 AM – 12:45 PM
COHATCH Polaris -- The Meridian Room, 1554 Polaris Pkwy suite 325, Columbus, OH 43240, USA
Event Details
"Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:19-20
This verse serves as the cornerstone for many disciplemaking ministries, including the Columbus Discipleship Network. But when Jesus instructed his disciples to "make disciples," what exactly did he mean by that? Adopting a set of beliefs? Living in a particular way? People who are growing in their faith? Meeting 1:1 at Starbucks once a week to read a book with a Christian mentor?
Ryan Weingartner bumped up against this problem of definition when he took on a new national role overseeing discipleship at Youth for Christ. Intead of side-stepping the question or just using his own definition, he took a very deep dive into what Jesus meant when he used the word discipleship, and his conclusions are compelling. He has graciously agreed to share his research and insights with us!
PLEASE NOTE: We'll meet at the Polaris COHATCH for the 2024-2025 season.
Columbus Discipleship Network meets the third Thursday of the month (second Tuesday in Nov & Dec) for inspiration, equipping, and community for everyday disciplemakers. A catered lunch is provided free of charge, but we do ask that you RSVP. Feel free to invite anyone you think may benefit.
